Welcome to Upington’s Blog. My name is Pieter van Wyk and I am a proud resident of Upington. My family and I moved here over the December holiday in 2008. We fell in love with the town years back and when we finally got the opportunity to move here we grabbed it with both hands.
Because I have been living online for the last 21 years it was the first place I turned to when I needed some stuff done around the new house? I was shocked to find that people had to pay with an arm and a leg to advertise online! There where no directory of businesses and most searches for Upington resulted in either accommodation or tourism done by outsiders.
I decided to share my expertise with Upington and make the town more marketable online. The first step was to establish a place any business could advertise at low cost, an online database of businesses in the area. The second step is the blog (what you are reading now) and finally a forum where people can share thoughts and ideas. (Postponed until 2011)
The Directory is doing very well and had more than a million hits in 2009 . During 2009 the Directory moved to a new domain (www.upington.biz) and the blog moved to www.rivercity.co.za to keep up with the massive amount of traffic to the website.
The blog was intended as a place I can give free advice to anybody visiting Upington on places to stay, attractions and everyday life in Upington. If you have something special you would like to share from Upington or have a truly great guesthouse let me know and I will do a review for you!
