n96976176372_4987The father of a Stellenbosch student was yesterday still trying to come to grips with his daughter’s murder — and the fact that her alleged murderer is one of his son’s best friends.

Eren van Rensburg, 20, was found buried in the dunes of Elands Bay, north of Saldanha, on Wednesday, two days after she was reported missing to the police.

The second-year marketing student was sharing a flat with her brother, Byron, her father, Errol van Rensburg, told The Times yesterday.

Police have arrested 24-year-old Jacobus Eksteen, also a student at the University of Stellenbosch who matriculated at Upington High School with six distinctions.

He made a brief appearance yesterday in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and kidnapping.

Eksteen has been remanded in custody and will appear in court again on June 9.

It is understood that he was charged with the crime after confessing to the police.

Captain Rene Matthee, of the Stellenbosch police, said an autopsy will be performed today.

Matthee said that the possibility of sexual assault could not be ruled out.

She would not say how the dark- haired student was murdered.

Errol van Rensburg, an employee of the Mossel Bay municipality, said his daughter was “extremely intelligent and artistic”.

He said that she had long dreamed of working in Japan after finishing her studies.

“She was learning Japanese and was very interested in Japanese culture,” he said.

He confirmed that Eksteen has been a friend of his son, Byron, for six years.

“I don’t know him personally,” he said.

“I have no idea why this happened, but I’ll leave it to the police to find out.”

He said his eldest daughter, Neschka, 26, was due to arrive in South Africa today from Vienna, Austria, where she works in the hotel industry .
